Falkenstein Castle stands above the Selke valley in the Harz mountains, on a rocky ridge in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt. Built in the 12th century by the lords of Konradsburg, it is best known as the place where Eike von Repgow is said to have written the Sachsenspiegel after 1220, an early German law book. Today the medieval buildings house a museum, and the 31-metre keep can be climbed as a viewing tower. The castle was never conquered, and its layout of gates, outer wards and defensive walls remains largely intact.
