To make a day of it

Château fort de la Faye stands in Olmet (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century, 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In the commune of Olmet, in the Puy-de-Dôme department, the ruins of the château de la Faye occupy a fortified site dating back to the 14th century, built over the remains of an earlier military post. The quadrangular enclosure flanked by towers still includes a round tower and a north-east tower that once bore machicolations, of which only the moulded band remains. The residential buildings have almost entirely disappeared, apart from a doorway decorated with an ogee arch, but the successive building phases, from the 14th to the 17th century, can still be traced on site. The property, privately owned by the same family, has been undergoing restoration since the early 2000s.

What to know

  • The monument is a partially restored ruined site, not a fully furnished château.
  • Visiting involves walking among ruins and old masonry, so some caution and basic mobility are needed.
  • The site has been listed as a historic monument since 1986.
  • No verified information is available on opening hours or admission fees, so it is best to check directly with the château.
  • The property remains privately inhabited and managed by a family, which may limit access at certain times.
