In Marcoux, in the Loire department, the château de Goutelas began as a medieval stronghold before being turned into a Renaissance residence in the mid 16th century. The Papon family built its H shaped layout and regular façade inspired by the nearby château de la Bastie d'Urfé, and the great hall and a chapel with mural paintings have survived from that period. Left derelict and stripped of many decorative features in the 19th century, the building underwent a restoration starting in 1961 carried out by volunteers, who turned it into a cultural centre still active today.
