Perched on a volcanic outcrop above the Forez plain, the ruins of Montrond castle span several centuries of history, from an early fortification dating to the 12th century to Renaissance alterations commissioned by the d'Apchon family. Visitors can see a 15th-century residential building with mullioned windows, a series of fireplaces, and a flanking tower pierced with gun loops, the only surviving elements after a revolutionary fire and 19th-century quarrying. Rescued from collapse by a volunteer association before passing into the hands of the town, the site reflects both the Wars of Religion and a long period of neglect followed by restoration.
