Château du Fraysse stands in Terrasson-Lavilledieu (Dordogne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages, 17th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
Fraysse Castle, held by the Saint-Exupéry family since the late 14th century in Terrasson-Lavilledieu, stands upon the remains of an earlier feudal stronghold. The edifice blends medieval foundations, whose walls survive underground, with expansions from the 17th and 18th centuries that gradually transformed it into an open residence. Damaged during the Wars of Religion and the Fronde, it underwent restoration and embellishment until the Revolution, then again after 1815. A terrace, gardens, and two medieval towers flanking the north façade complete the composition.
What to know
- The castle has been listed as a historical monument since 2001, with protection extending to the building, the north terrace, the garden and the park.
- Remains of the first feudal construction from the 13th or 14th century persist beneath the present castle, notably underground where the old cellars extend.
- The two medieval towers visible to the east and west of the north terrace belong to the former fortified enclosure of the site.
- A chapel dedicated to the Virgin, built in 1852, complements the castle's layout.
