What the French Ministry of Culture records

Durant la guerre de Cent ans, le château passa tour à tour aux mains des Français et des Anglais. Il dût en sortir assez ruiné pour être reconstruit au 16e siècle et participer aux guerres de Religion. L'édifice est bâti sur un éperon rocheux. Il comporte une première enceinte polygonale constituée d'une muraille soutenue par quelques contreforts, pourvue au 16e siècle de quelques échauguettes aux angles. Dans l'avancée est, un escalier descend à une poterne défendue par deux meurtrières superposées. En retrait de ce premier rempart, le château primitif s'élevait à l'abri d'une seconde muraille. L'accès se faisait par un châtelet d'entrée. Ce château primitif comportait un donjon carré au sud duquel se trouvaient les bâtiments dont il ne reste que la base des murs. Au 16e siècle, il fut remplacé par un second château composé d'un corps de logis rectangulaire terminé par une grosse tour carrée et, aux angles nord-est et sud-est, par des tours rondes. Au sud-est, en retour, un bâtiment renfermant les chapelles. Celle du rez-de-chaussée remonte au 12e siècle. Au-dessus, une seconde chapelle dût être rebâtie plus tard.
