Set on a wooded hillside between two small valleys near Salignac-Eyvigues in the Périgord noir, the Château du Claud spreads two wings at right angles around a circular stair tower. Founded as a noble stronghold in the 14th century and ruined during the Hundred Years' War, it was largely rebuilt around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, complete with a machicolated keep and a round tower housing a chapel. Still a private residence today, it retains painted ceilings and a carved fireplace depicting a stag flanked by does.
