To make a day of it

Château de Kernévez stands in Saint-Pol-de-Léon (Finistère), in the Bretagne region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

At the entrance to Saint-Pol-de-Léon, the château de Kernévez stands in neo-classical style within a 37-hectare landscaped park stretching down to the sea. The present building, erected between 1849 and 1866 for the de Guébriant family, replaced an older manor of which only a carved 1627 fireplace remains, now set into the kitchens. The grounds still bear the layout drawn by landscape designer Denis Bühler, along with a rose garden, a pond, the remains of a 16th-century chapel and a schist dolmen. Granite stables, a coach house and gatekeepers' lodges complete this estate, a notable example of the mid-19th-century aristocratic return to rural life.
