Le château de la Briantais est d'abord un site exceptionnel au débouché de la Rance, dont l'histoire à l'époque moderne est surtout connue depuis la seconde moitié du 18e siècle avec la construction, en partie inachevée, d'un château - aujourd'hui ruiné - entouré d'un vaste jardin classique. Le domaine est saisi comme bien national à la Révolution mais conserve son intégrité spatiale. Son évolution est marquée, dans le dernier tiers du 19e siècle, par l'édification en plusieurs étapes du logis actuel, la transformation de l'ancien jardin classique en parc paysager et le réaménagement des dépendances, conférant au site l'identité qu'on lui connaît de nos jours.
