Built at the end of the 15th century, the château of Gontaud-de-Nogaret stands at the centre of the village that bears its name, in the Lot-et-Garonne department. Its survival owes much to a twist of history: as the only Catholic house in the town, it was spared from destruction during the Wars of Religion and later during the Fronde, while the rest of the town was pillaged and burned. Inside, a spiral staircase serves two large rooms repeated across three floors, alongside turret watch-posts, old woodwork and terracotta tile flooring. A section that collapsed in 1949 was rebuilt in the early 2000s.
