To make a day of it

Château de Couanac stands in Varaire (Lot), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

On the Limogne causse, a short distance from Varaire, the château de Couanac spreads three wings around a courtyard, framed by round towers, a square tower with machicolations, and Renaissance dormer windows topped with pediments. Its chapel occupies the transept of a 12th century Romanesque church, whose east facing apse and carved capitals on the triumphal arch recall the earlier building. A crypt beneath the tower holds the remains of former owners. Begun in the early 16th century on the site of an older stronghold, it ranks among the notable Renaissance residences of the Quercy region.
