In Iteuil, in the Vienne department, the château de Bernay preserves an L shaped main building begun in the early 15th century, flanked by a spiral staircase tower and surrounded by outbuildings. Stripped of its carved decoration and furnishings early in the 20th century after being sold, it still shows Gothic windows, several old fireplaces with window seats, and the ruins of a chapel with a flat-ended, ribbed vaulted apse, along with a former dovecote. The site now reads as a partly ruined medieval ensemble in which the original architecture remains legible despite the losses.
