At Iteuil, in the Vienne department, the château d'Aigne is a 19th century residence preceded by a much older gateway. This 17th century entrance, believed to have come from a now vanished building in Poitiers, is thought to have been carved by the Girouard brothers, sculptors well known in Poitiers at the time. The entablature would originally have carried statues or trophies, since lost. It is this relocated gateway, rather than the château itself, that gives the site its historical interest.
