In Gençay, in the Vienne department, the ruins of a 13th-century castle bear witness to a long history going back at least to the end of the 10th century, with several successive fortresses on the same site. Linked to the name of Du Guesclin, who secured its surrender from English hands in 1375 alongside the Duke of Berry after a siege, the site went through the conflicts between the Plantagenets and Capetians and later the Hundred Years' War. The remains visible today belong to the third building phase, raised in the 13th century thanks to the dowry gained by the lord of Taillebourg through his marriage to a Lusignan heiress.
