What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le fief de Baïgorry fut créé en 1033 par Sanche le Grand de Navarre. Durant les guerres de Religion, le seigneur d'Etchaux devint l'homme de confiance d'Henri IV. Cette période marque l'apogée de la famille. La maison forte est agrandie vers 1555 (château actuel). En 1848, le château fut acheté par les D'Abbadie d'Arrast qui firent aménager de nouvelles dépendances et des terrasses. L'édifice rectangulaire est flanqué à l'ouest de deux tours rondes et à l'est de deux échauguettes, l'une ronde, l'autre polygonale. Les ouvertures ont été remaniées aux 18e et 19e siècles. L'intérieur conserve une rampe d'escalier en fer forgé.
