To make a day of it

Château d'Olce stands in Iholdy (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: milieu 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

At Iholdy, the château d'Olce owes its present form to Jean d'Olce, bishop of Bayonne, who had an older dwelling, first recorded in the Middle Ages, rebuilt in the mid 17th century. Inside, a grand staircase fills half the main building, crowned by a domed ceiling bearing the bishop's coat of arms, alongside a chapel with stuccoed decoration. The estate has remained in the hands of the d'Olce family's descendants ever since.
