What the French Ministry of Culture records

Maison noble primitive du Labourd, les seigneurs de Garro sont liés à la Navarre avant de revenir définitivement dans le Labourd. Le château, rasé au 13e siècle sur ordre du roi d’Angleterre, est reconstruit au 14e siècle. Devenus barons d’Urtubie de Garro au 16ème siècle, à la tête d’un vaste domaine, ils procèdent à la reconstruction du château en 1700. Après le décès du dernier baron, en 1923, le domaine est vendu, en 1930, à Jacques-Hyppolite Lesca qui y créa un institut d’agriculture basque et en fit don à la ville de Bayonne. A cette occasion, des aménagements sont entrepris sur le château et la dépendance adjacente, sans toutefois les dénaturer. L’institution ferme en 1973 et la ville de Bayonne cède le domaine à la commune de Mendionde, en 1996.
