The Bergholtz motte is a circular earthwork approximately eleven metres high, all that remains of a castle built in the 11th century to guard the territorial limits of Murbach Abbey. Stone foundations uncovered during post-World War II excavations represent the only surviving traces of the medieval structure, which was destroyed during the French Revolution. This fortified mound offers physical evidence of how religious institutions protected their lands through military outposts.
