What the French Ministry of Culture records

L'île Paté était autrefois appelée île Saint-Simon. Vers 1680, Louis XIV, encore sous l'impression des guerres de Religion et des troubles de la Fronde, dans lesquelles Blaye avait eu un rôle important, se préoccupa de perfectionner les fortifications existantes. Vauban fit construire sur la rive droite de la Gironde les enceintes de la citadelle de Blaye. Au centre, il fit élever, en 1689, le fort Paté. Défendu par quatre bastions et une demi-lune, le fort est constitué par une tour en maçonnerie de forme elliptique. Cette tour de douze mètres de haut était crénelée. Elle abritait les magasins à poudre et un bâtiment servant de corps de garde. La défense de l'île fut complétée plus tard par des positions de batterie.
