What the French Ministry of Culture records
La ville, défendue par un castrum dès le IVe siècle, restaurée et agrandie à de nombreuses reprises, est complètement modifiée par Vauban de 1686 à 1689. Il trace le plan d'une nouvelle forteresse composée de deux bastions à orillons au centre et de deux demi-bastions en bordure de la Gironde. Ils sont précédés et encadrés par trois demi-lunes, des fossés et des glacis. Des éléments plus anciens sont encore visibles ou intégrés dans les sous-sols des nouvelles constructions. L'accès à l'intérieur de la citadelle qui conserve encore tous ses bâtiments, se fait par deux portes monumentales précédées d'un pont et d'une demi lune. Couvent des Minimes et son cloître : 17e siècle.
