What the French Ministry of Culture records
Le système de fortifications établi au 17e siècle à partir des plans de Vauban, est destiné à fermer l'accès de la Gironde et empêcher la remontée de l'estuaire par les navires. Le fort Médoc faisait partie de ce système. Elevé de 1689 à 1691, son intérêt militaire est contesté et le bâtiment est laissé sans entretien dès le début du 18e siècle. Il présente un plan quadrangulaire cantonné, à chaque angle, par un bastion relié par des courtines. Une porte monumentale ouvre sur une vaste cour dans laquelle s'élèvent différents bâtiments. De chaque côté, deux bâtiments rectangulaires symétriques servant de casernes, terminés par une chapelle et une boulangerie, une poudrière et deux corps de garde et de commandement.
