To make a day of it

Wasserburg Mulda stands in Mulda/Sa. (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. Recorded dating: 12th century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Wasserburg Mulda survives today only as an archaeological earthwork, the remains of a moated castle in the now-abandoned village of Gruene near Mulda in Saxony. No written source describes the fortification itself: its existence was only reconstructed from a field name, 'Altes Schloß', found on an old map, and later located on the ground in the late 20th century. What remains are circular earth ramparts, double ditches and a heap of stones suggesting the former position of a tower, with no standing structure to see. A visit here appeals to those interested in landscape archaeology rather than a built monument.

What to know

  • No standing building remains, only earthworks, ditches and ramparts within the forest.
  • The site lies about 2.5 km southeast of the church of Mulda, within state forest land.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as this is an open-air archaeological site.
  • Reaching it means walking through forest on gently sloping, unmarked terrain.
  • The appeal is historical and archaeological rather than visual or architectural.
