To make a day of it

Wasserburg Lichtenberg stands in Lichtenberg/Erzgeb. (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wasserburg Lichtenberg, also known as Ringelteich, refers to the remains of a former moated stronghold northwest of the village of Lichtenberg/Erzgeb. in Saxony. First recorded in 1445 as the Rittersitz Lichtemberg, it is believed to date back to the 14th century. The buildings of the central enclosure have long since vanished, but the surrounding water-filled moat, 10 to 15 metres wide, along with an outer earthen bank, can still be traced in the landscape. This is not a castle to tour in the usual sense, but rather an open-air archaeological site.

What to know

  • No standing buildings remain; only the water-filled moat and an earthen bank still mark the former stronghold.
  • The site has been protected as an archaeological ground monument since 1960.
  • The pond was once used for bathing, but it now suffers from a lack of water supply.
  • A visit amounts to a walk around the moat, with no known visitor facilities on site.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are associated with the site, which is in the open air and freely accessible.
