Schloss Freudenstein stands at the heart of Freiberg's old town in Saxony, on a site first fortified in the late 12th century by Margrave Otto the Rich to protect the town and its silver mining. The present four-winged building dates largely from the 16th century, after the original stronghold was later converted into a storage facility in the 18th century. Following extensive restoration, it now houses the terra mineralia collection, described as one of the world's largest mineral displays, along with the Saxon mining archive. The inner courtyard hosts seasonal cultural events.
