The Schloss Grimma stands on the banks of the Mulde river, near the Pöppelmannbrücke, on the site of a former moated stronghold built by the Margraves of Meissen around 1200. Its present structure dates largely from the 14th century, with a palas to the east bearing traces of several building periods and the remains of a keep to the west, torn down in the 18th century due to its poor condition. Having become a secondary residence of the Wettin dynasty in the early 15th century, it hosted regional assemblies and was once visited by Martin Luther. The inner courtyard can be walked through, though the building now houses court offices.
