To make a day of it
Schloss Brandis stands in Brandis (Landkreis Leipzig), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Brandis stands right on the market square of the small Saxon town of Brandis, east of Leipzig. Built in the early 18th century for the von Bodenhausen family to designs by David Schatz, a pupil of the architect behind Dresden's Zwinger, it reflects the baroque style that spread from Dresden to the Leipzig area. The estate combines a main house with two wings and an extensive landscaped park, itself laid out from the 18th century onward and still marked by a mausoleum, a water tower and several lion sculptures. Having served over the 20th century as a hotel, a school and later a care home, the complex has undergone restoration since the 2000s that has brought back much of the original character of its wings and grounds.
What to know
- Much of the main building now houses private apartments, so visits are generally limited to the park and the grounds.
- The several-hectare park can be walked freely and retains its historic layout, with a mausoleum, a water tower and lion sculptures.
- The site sits directly on Brandis's market square, a short distance from Leipzig, about 12 kilometres away.
- No fixed opening hours or admission fees apply to the building's interior, so it is worth checking locally before visiting.
