To make a day of it

Burg Groitzsch stands in Groitzsch (Landkreis Leipzig), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Groitzsch occupies a spur overlooking the valley of the Weiße Elster in Groitzsch, Saxony. Its remains include some of the oldest known stone structures in Saxony, dating from the last quarter of the 11th century and associated with Count Wiprecht of Groitzsch. Visitors today can see a partly reconstructed round chapel and the stump of a round tower, set within grounds shaped like an amphitheatre.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin, freely accessible at all times and without charge.
  • It is an archaeological remnant, so visitors should not expect a restored castle with rooms to tour.
  • A road cuts through the grounds, separating the former main bailey from the outer bailey.
  • In summer, open-air concerts and performances take place on the amphitheatre-shaped grounds.
  • A lapidarium on site displays around forty regional boundary and field stones.
