To make a day of it

Schloss Rötha stands in Rötha (Landkreis Leipzig), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Rötha stood for more than three centuries south of Leipzig until it was demolished in 1969, so nothing of the building remains above ground. Rebuilt after Thirty Years' War damage under Carl Freiherr von Friesen, it was a four-winged complex with corner towers, standing near St George's church. Its best-known episode came just before the Battle of Leipzig, when it served as headquarters for the allied monarchs fighting Napoleon, with the Austrian emperor and the Russian tsar both lodging there. A memorial stone now marks the former site.

What to know

  • The schloss was demolished in 1969, so there is no building left to visit on site.
  • Only a memorial stone marks its former location in Rötha, near the Pleiße river.
  • The interest of the site is mainly historical, tied to its role before the 1813 Battle of Leipzig.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility details exist, since the building no longer stands.
  • St George's church, about 200 metres from the former site, remains a useful landmark.
