To make a day of it
Pleißenburg stands in Leipzig (Leipzig), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Pleißenburg no longer stands as a building: the name refers to a vanished stronghold of Leipzig, of which only the tower survives, absorbed into the Neues Rathaus, the city's present town hall. Raised in the 13th century by Margrave Dietrich and rebuilt as a fortress in 1549 under Hieronymus Lotter, it served military and administrative functions for centuries before being torn down in 1897. What can be seen today is the tower's shape, reused as the base of the Neues Rathaus tower, and the so called Pappenheim oriel window, carried over onto the new building.

What to know
- There is no castle left to visit as such: only the Neues Rathaus in Leipzig, built on the site, still incorporates the tower of the former Pleißenburg.
- The so called Pappenheim oriel window, from the original inner courtyard, can still be seen on the present building.
- The site now forms today's Burgplatz in central Leipzig, easily reached on foot.
- No opening hours or admission fees apply to the Pleißenburg itself, since it was demolished in 1897.
