To make a day of it

Burg Kriebstein stands in Kriebstein (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Adult admission costs 8 EUR. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on October 16, 2026.

Perched above the Zschopau gorge at Kriebstein in Saxony, this 14th century stronghold began as a fortified residence rather than a purely military outpost. The von Beerwalde family started building it from 1384, and later Gothic and then neo-Gothic campaigns, including work by master builder Arnold von Westfalen, who also worked on Meissen's Albrechtsburg, gave the castle much of its present form. Visitors today can see the lordly chambers, a Gothic hall with ribbed vaulting, and a grand festive hall reworked in the 19th century in a medieval revival style.

What to know

  • The castle is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Saxony.

  • The visit includes the lordly chambers, a vaulted Gothic hall, and a grand neo-Gothic festive hall.
  • The castle stands on a rocky spur above the Zschopau gorge, meaning visitors should expect slopes and stairs.
