To make a day of it

Wasserburg Ringethal stands in Mittweida (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wasserburg Ringethal refers to the remains of a former moated stronghold west of Ringethal in Saxony. The structure, long since vanished, is thought to date from the 13th or 14th century and was built on an artificial island within a pond, giving it the alternative names Inselteich or Schneckenteich. The core enclosure formed a rounded rectangle roughly 15 by 20 metres, separated from the banks by water some 10 metres wide on the northern side. A section of stone walling still survives at the north-eastern corner of the platform, which rises about two metres above the water.

What to know

  • No standing building remains; the site is limited to a moated island platform with a few traces of masonry.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the place can be viewed freely from around the pond.
  • A visit mainly involves walking around and observing the site rather than entering any structure.
  • The site lies within the municipality of Mittweida in Saxony, near the village of Ringethal.
