To make a day of it

Unterwildenstein stands in Leibertingen (Landkreis Sigmaringen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Unterwildenstein is a medieval castle ruin perched on an isolated rocky spur north of Leibertingen, in the Danube valley. Likely built in the 12th century by a family of lesser nobility, it belongs to a group of four fortified sites that predate the neighbouring Burg Wildenstein. Only wall fragments remain on the valley side, along with a natural cavity reaching about ten metres into the rock. No surviving documents clarify whether it was an independent stronghold or linked to the Burg Altwildenstein just above it.

What to know

  • The site consists only of wall remains and a rock cavity, with no visitor facilities on location.
  • Access is on foot, along the so called Ritterweg path, over steep terrain.
  • The ruin lies close to the Altwildenstein ruin, with which it may once have formed a single defensive complex.
  • There is no reliable information on opening times, fees or official access conditions, as this is an open-air site reached independently.
