To make a day of it

The Ifflinger Schloss stands in Fridingen an der Donau, on the site of a fortified residential tower built around 1330 by Heinrich von Hohenberg. Over the centuries the building served many purposes, from administrative seat of the Hohenberg family to poorhouse, school and fire station, until a fire in 1942 destroyed its roof structure and upper floor. Restored from 1977 onward, it now houses the local heritage museum, which moved into its rooms in 1987.
What to know
- The current building houses Fridingen's local heritage museum (Heimatmuseum).
- The original 14th-century residential tower was demolished after 1800, so the building seen today results from successive alterations and rebuilding.
- A fire in 1942 destroyed the roof structure, upper floor and staircase, and the historic bell has been missing ever since.
- Restoration work from 1977 onward uncovered a Gothic window band in the former main hall.
