To make a day of it
Strahlenburg stands in Schriesheim (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Strahlenburg overlooks Schriesheim from a spur of the Ölberg hill, on the edge of the Odenwald, with views stretching across the Rhine plain and, on clear days, as far as the Palatinate Forest. Founded around 1235 by Conrad of Strahlenberg, the ruined castle survived a siege in 1470 and a fire in 1488, then partial dismantling in the 18th century before the Counts of Oberndorff secured what remained. What stands today is a round keep roughly 27 metres tall and the shell of the residential building, with three early Gothic windows still intact. An inn now operates within the walls, combining a meal stop with the usual approach to the ruins.
What to know
- Access to the ruin depends on the opening hours of the inn located within the castle walls, outside of which the site is closed.
- The keep cannot be climbed due to structural issues.
- Reaching the site involves a walk up the flank of the Ölberg hill, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
- The view over the Rhine plain is one of the main reasons to visit, best enjoyed on a clear day.
