To make a day of it
Schloss Philippsthal stands in Philippsthal (Werra) (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Philippsthal stands in the Werra valley on the site of a former Hersfeld monastery dissolved after the Reformation. Built as a baroque residence between 1685 and 1735 for the Landgraves of Hesse-Philippsthal, it consists of three wings arranged around a trapezoidal courtyard, with a gatehouse closing the fourth side. The former monastery church, incorporated into the complex, contains the family crypt of the landgraves. The premises now house the town hall, a public library and a museum devoted to the former inner German border.
What to know
- The complex combines a town hall, a library and a museum, so only parts of the building are open to visitors.
- The museum housed in the gatehouse is dedicated to the former inner German border, which once ran close by.
- The palace park, roughly 50,000 square metres, stretches down to the Werra river and combines a French-style garden near the building with an English landscape garden below.
- The north wing burned down in 1976 and was rebuilt to preserve the look of the original three-wing layout.
