To make a day of it

Grasburg (Hohenroda) stands in Hohenroda (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Grasburg is a vanished hilltop fortification perched on the Grasberg, at 469 metres, northwest of the village of Mansbach in the municipality of Hohenroda. Rather than a castle in the usual sense, it consists of buried remains of a circular rampart thought to date from the eighth century, likely used as a refuge or gathering point during Saxon incursions. The site, now fully overgrown, lies within the Schwärzelsberg-Langeberg-Grasburg nature reserve, where traces of the wall and its surrounding ditch can still be made out.

What to know

  • No standing structures remain, only traces of a wall and ditch beneath the vegetation.
  • The site lies in woodland within a nature reserve, reached by a walking path from Mansbach.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable since the terrain is natural and uneven in places.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is a freely accessible outdoor site.
  • This is not a destination for visitors expecting a restored castle or buildings to tour.
