To make a day of it
Alt-Tannenburg stands in Nentershausen (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on October 13, 2026.
Alt-Tannenburg is the site of a former spur castle on a wooded hill at the edge of Nentershausen in Hesse. Likely built before the neighbouring Burg Tannenberg, it has left behind no standing walls, only a crescent-shaped moat still visible in the ground. Visitors come less for a built monument than for a quiet historical trace folded into the forest of the Richelsdorfer Gebirge.
What to know
- The site lies roughly 200 metres southwest of Nentershausen, near the village cemetery.
- It can be reached via a marked hiking trail, and an information panel is set up on location.
- No wall remains are visible today, only the trace of a crescent-shaped moat marks the former stronghold.
- Access to the site is free of charge.
- Sturdy footwear is advisable since the ground is natural woodland terrain, not developed for visitors.
