To make a day of it

Sommerschloss Blumenstein stands in Wildeck (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. Recorded dating: 18th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Blumenstein summer palace was built from 1770 for Landgrave Constantine of Hesse-Rotenburg, who wanted a stately summer residence near Wildeck surrounded by an extensive park. The palace itself has long since vanished, torn down in the late 19th century after passing into Prussian ownership, but its former guesthouse survives, absorbed into a forestry building. What draws visitors today is mainly the park: a twenty-two-metre sandstone obelisk, a pond with its so-called Lovers' Island, and several tree-lined avenues still dating from the 18th century.

What to know

  • The original palace no longer exists, only the park and the former guesthouse, now a forestry house, can be visited.
  • The site lies in woodland in the Richelsdorfer Gebirge, in a secluded valley, so reaching it involves walking.
  • There are no fixed opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open park and ruin site rather than a ticketed monument.
  • The sandstone obelisk and the pond with its island are among the best-preserved features of the 18th-century park.
  • Since the ground is wooded and partly uneven, sturdy walking shoes are advisable.
