To make a day of it

Wasserburg Friedewald stands in Friedewald (Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg), in Hesse, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wasserburg Friedewald stands in ruins at the centre of the village of Friedewald, on the eastern edge of the Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg in Hesse. Originally a lightly fortified seat of the abbots of Hersfeld, it was rebuilt in the late 15th century by master builder Hans Jakob von Ettlingen into a four-cornered stronghold, of which the massive 'Dicker Turm' still survives. Destroyed by French troops under General Stainville during the Seven Years' War, it was never rebuilt, though its outer bailey now houses a museum and visitors can climb the tower for views over the site and surrounding countryside.

What to know

  • The site lies in the centre of the village of Friedewald and can be visited without confirmed fixed opening hours.
  • The Dicker Turm, the main surviving tower, can be climbed for views over the whole former stronghold.
  • The southern wing of the outer bailey houses a museum dedicated to the site's history.
  • Part of the outer bailey has been converted into a modern hotel, which is not part of the historical visit.
