The Krayenburg rises above the Werra valley on the wooded summit of the Krayenberg, near Bad Salzungen. This 12th century ruin was once among the most significant Romanesque strongholds in the region, before being destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. What remains today are parts of the great hall, sections of the ramparts and vaulted cellars, alongside a hotel and restaurant and a lookout tower built in the 20th century.
