To make a day of it

Burgstelle Schlösschen (Bad Salzungen) stands in Bad Salzungen (Wartburgkreis), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstelle Schlösschen marks the site of a former hilltop fortification, now vanished, on the Weinberg, a western spur of the Heimshöhe above the Werra river near Bad Salzungen. Its date of construction remains undetermined and no builder can be named with certainty, though the noble family von Salza has been suggested. The stronghold is thought to have controlled an old road linking Eisenach to Salzungen as well as a nearby ford across the Werra. Later sandstone quarrying destroyed much of the earthworks, leaving only fragments of a ditch profile visible along the slope.

What to know

  • This is not a standing castle but an archaeological site reduced to faint ditch traces.
  • The Weinberg hill was partly destroyed by sandstone quarrying, which erased most of the remains.
  • Neither the construction date nor the builder's identity has been firmly established.
  • The site sits on high ground above the Werra valley, so reaching it involves a walk uphill.
  • No information is available regarding opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities.
