To make a day of it

Schnepfenburg (Bad Salzungen) stands in Bad Salzungen (Wartburgkreis), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Schnepfenburg was a medieval stronghold built on a rise overlooking the town lake of Bad Salzungen in Thuringia. Founded around 1160 under the authority of Fulda Abbey, it guarded the approach to the town and its saltworks before being absorbed into the town's fortifications as its southwestern bastion. Destroyed in the great fire of 1786, it was partly demolished, and its foundations now support a later building used as a courthouse, along with the town church. No visible remains of the original stronghold have survived.

What to know

  • No visible remains of the original stronghold survive; the site now holds a courthouse and a church.
  • The location lies south of the old town, on a rise overlooking Bad Salzungen's town lake (Burgsee).
  • A visit therefore amounts to exploring the historical site rather than an intact monument.
  • There is no information on opening hours or fees, as there is no monument open to visitors.
