Schloss Maineck stands on the banks of the Main, at the northern edge of the village of Maineck, on a site occupied since the 12th century. Of the original stronghold, destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, what remains today is chiefly the former administrative house of the cathedral provosts of Bamberg, which forms the core of the building. The complex still bears the marks of its turbulent past, having been damaged in turn by the Hussite Wars, the Peasants' War, the Second Margrave War and the Thirty Years' War.
