To make a day of it
Burg Niesten stands in Weismain (Landkreis Lichtenfels), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Niesten, known in English as Burgstall Niesten, was once a significant medieval stronghold above the village of Niesten, now part of the town of Weismain. Built around the year 1000 to guard a trade route between Bamberg and Weismain, it passed from the lords of Niesten to the dukes of Andechs-Meranien, the last of whom, Otto II, died there in 1248. Only scant wall remains survive on the rocky spur today, and the site is freely accessible, its slopes now grazed by goats and sheep. A small cave, the Eselsloch, lies right along the path leading up to the ruin.
What to know
- The site consists only of ruined wall fragments, with no reconstructed building to visit.
- Access is free and open, with no set opening hours.
- The terrain is a rocky spur, steep on three sides, so reaching it requires a reasonable level of fitness.
- The slopes around the ruin are used as grazing land for goats and sheep, so visitors should watch for livestock.
- A small cave called the Eselsloch lies directly along the path up to the ruin.
