Set on a narrow dolomite outcrop, Zwernitz Castle overlooks the village of Wonsees in Bavaria. First recorded in 1156 as the seat of the Walpoten family, it passed around 1300 to the Burgraves of Nuremberg and later to the Margraves of Kulmbach and Bayreuth. Visitors can climb the keep, which offers wide views over the Fränkische Schweiz nature park, and see late Romanesque remains marked by their characteristic rusticated stonework.
