Wernstein Castle rises above the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Mainleus, in the Landkreis Kulmbach, Bavaria. Built in the 14th century on the site of an earlier, destroyed stronghold, it has belonged to the von Künsberg family for more than six hundred years, who reshaped it during the Renaissance into an opulent residence. The complex combines a 16th century lower castle, its rounded towers decorated with carved medallions, with an older upper core enclosed by a double ring of walls. Visitors can approach the courtyards and outer walls, but the interior, still inhabited by the builders' descendants, is closed to the public.
