To make a day of it
Burg Kasendorf stands in Kasendorf (Landkreis Kulmbach), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burg Kasendorf no longer exists as a standing fortress, but its hilltop site on the Turmberg above the village of Kasendorf preserves traces of very old settlement. Remains of Iron Age fortifications sit alongside the ruins of a gateway from the 8th or 9th century and the foundations of a chapel built in 1445. Almost nothing remains of the medieval Burg itself, thought to have been built between the 11th and 12th centuries, apart from the foundations of its round keep, on which the Magnusturm watchtower was raised in 1498 and still stands today.
What to know
- No castle building survives as such, only an open-air archaeological site on the Turmberg, at 498 m elevation, rising 110 metres above the village.
- The Magnusturm, a 20-metre watchtower built in 1498, is entered through a small door and climbed via an internal metal spiral staircase leading to a glassed-in viewing platform.
- Reaching the site involves walking up to a largely open hilltop plateau of 14.5 hectares.
- Information panels placed around the site and near the tower explain the different periods of occupation.
- From the top of the tower there are views over Kasendorf, the Main valley, the Plassenburg in Kulmbach, and the uplands of Franconian Switzerland.
