To make a day of it

Marienburg (Mosel) stands in Landkreis Cochem-Zell (Landkreis Cochem-Zell), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Marienburg stands on a rocky spur almost encircled by a loop of the Moselle, near Zell, Pünderich, Alf and Bullay. Founded in the 12th century as a convent of Augustinian canonesses on the remains of an earlier archiepiscopal stronghold, it was dissolved in 1515 by order of the Archbishop of Trier and later heavily damaged in the 17th century, passing through private ownership before being restored to religious use. The site, now belonging to the Diocese of Trier, houses a youth education centre and a church that was reconsecrated in the 20th century.

What to know

  • The site now functions as a youth education centre run by the Diocese of Trier, so parts of the building are not freely accessible.
  • Its position on a hilltop above the Moselle means a climb on foot from the surrounding villages.
  • The former convent church was reconsecrated and can be visited.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility details are published for casual visitors.
