To make a day of it

Winneburg stands in Cochem (Landkreis Cochem-Zell), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Winneburg is a ruined hilltop castle standing on a rocky spur above the Endertbach valley, not far from the Moselle. Built in the second half of the 13th century by the lords of Winnenberg, it was destroyed by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession and was never rebuilt. What remains today includes a round keep about 22 metres tall, together with traces of the great hall, outbuildings and the surrounding wall, reached by a bridge over the old moat.

What to know

  • The ruin is freely accessible at any time, with no opening hours or ticket.
  • The climb up from the valley is steep and requires a reasonable level of fitness.
  • There is no commercial operation on site, so no shop or visitor reception.
  • Medieval reenactment events are held several times a year by a local association, worth checking in advance if of interest.
  • The castle is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
