To make a day of it

Burgstall Stadel stands in Regenstauf (Landkreis Regensburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstall Stadel refers to the remains of a former spur castle, now vanished, on a small hilltop known as the Schlossberg above the hamlet of Stadel, near Karlstein, within the municipality of Regenstauf. Probably built in the 13th century and first documented in 1342, it stood at a crossing point of several old routes, suggesting it once served to monitor them. Only a short stretch of wall and faint traces of a ditch and rampart survive today, making it more an archaeological site than a place to visit in the usual sense. The nearby Karlstein estate, the only one of three related holdings to be expanded into a Schloss, effectively sealed the decline of the Stadel site.

What to know

  • Only a fragment of wall and faint traces of a ditch and rampart remain, with no standing building.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • No opening hours, fees or visitor facilities are given, as the site is an open-air location freely accessible.
  • The Schlossberg hilltop overlooks the hamlet of Stadel, near Karlstein, within the municipality of Regenstauf.
  • Expectations should be modest, as the interest lies mainly in its history and setting rather than in visible remains.
